The power of Aloe Vera

Aloe vera and its million benefits
Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries.

Aloe leaves secrete a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin.

Various studies have been conducted to examine the benefits of the aloe vera plant and it was found out that aloe vera does in fact have several properties that are effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, from flaky or dry skin, cosmetic ailments, hair and scalp problems to many more.

It is also said to be useful in treating wounds and burns, minor skin infections, cysts, diabetes, and elevated blood lipids in humans, and shows some promise in treating more serious and persistent conditions such as eczema, genital herpes, dandruff, psoriasis, canker sores, skin ulcers and others, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Here are 8 benefits of using aloe vera gel:

1. It treats sunburn.

Aloe Vera helps with sunburn through its powerful healing activity at the epithelial level of the skin, a layer of cells that cover the body. It acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps replenish its moisture. Because of its nutritional qualities and antioxidant properties, the skin heals quicker.

2. It acts as a moisturizer.

Aloe moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily skin complexion. For women who use mineral-based make-up, aloe vera acts as a moisturizer and is great for the face prior to the application to prevents skin drying. For men: Aloe vera gel can be used as an aftershave treatment as its healing properties can treat small cuts caused by shaving.

3. It treats acne.

Aloe vera gel contains two hormones: Auxin and Gibberellins. These two hormones provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin inflammation. Giberellin in aloe vera acts as a growth hormone stimulating the growth of new cells. It allows the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring.

Aloe is soothing and can reduce skin inflammations, blistering and itchiness, while helping the skin to heal more rapidly.  Aloe is used to effectively heal chronic skin problems, such as psoriasis, acne and eczema.

4. It fights aging.

As we age, everyone begins to worry about the appearance of fine lines and the loss of elasticity in their skin. Aloe leaves contain a plethora of antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and E that can help improve the skin's natural firmness and keep the skin hydrated.

5. It lessens the visibility of stretch marks.

The skin is like one big piece of elastic that’ll expand and contract as needed to accommodate growth. But if the skin stretches too far, too fast (due to pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss) the elasticity of the skin can be damaged. That’s what leaves those unsightly stretch marks. These marks appear due to minor tears in the layers of the skin caused by sudden and excessive stretching. Aloe vera gel can help hide these stretch marks by healing these wounds.

6. It's nutrient rich for good health.

This solid material contains over 75 different nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sugars, anthraquinones or phenolic compounds, lignin, saponins, sterols, amino acids and salicylic acid.

7. It soothes in periodontal disease.

According to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it's extremely helpful in the treatment of gum diseases like gingivitis, periodontitis. It reduces bleeding, inflammation and swelling of the gums. It is a powerful antiseptic in pockets where normal cleaning is difficult, and its antifungal properties help greatly in the problem of denture stomatitis, apthous ulcers, cracked and split corners of the mouth.

8. It aids in digestion.

The internal benefits of aloe vera are supposed to be just as amazing. when you take aloe vera juice, it aids in healing ulcers. Some people consider it a laxative, while others attribute that effect to its digestive qualities (which normalize the system and induce regularity). The juice is also prescribed for arthritis and rheumatism. To test any of these claims, steep the cut foliage in water or chew pieces of the fresh leaf.

  • Bicarbonate of soda (Baking soda) for treating acne

Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, has many uses in the beauty and health category. It can be used as deodorant, toothpaste and even in a number of home remedies for skin exfoliation.
Acne develops when growth of bacteria and the cells of your skin clump together causing a swollen pimple. Not only does acne cause major cosmetic concerns for many people, but it can also be quite uncomfortable.
Several skincare authorities have touted exfoliates to be part of an effective acne treatment and prevention regimen. Everyday household ingredients can be used in making exfoliating paste made from baking-soda. Simple home-made facial masks made with baking soda can help you deal with the acne trouble.

Is Baking Soda Effective in Treating Acne?

Baking soda is amphoteric which means that it has the ability to either act as a base or acid. This characteristic makes it a useful pH neutralizing chemical compound. It corrects the pH imbalance of the skin that contributes to acne formation. What's more, baking soda has mild anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that enable it to lessen the irritation caused by inflamed acne. Most importantly, baking soda has individual particles that are rounded and hard and also form fine powders thus making it a mild exfoliate.

How to Use Baking Soda to Treat Acne

Some people claim that skin pH imbalance can be caused by using baking soda long-term. As a result, bacteria growth, which plays a major role in occurrence of acne, is promoted. Treating acne depends on a number of factors since not all treatments, depending on the condition of your body and extent of acne, this baking soda remedy will not work for all patients. When using baking soda to treat acne, you should first test the skin. If the acne worsens and no positive results are experienced even after using it long-term, discontinue its use and seek advice from a dermatologist. They'll advise you on how to deal with it.

    1. Baking Soda Mask

    Benefits
    • Remove oil. You can use baking soda mask to remove oil over-secretion from your skin as you work to have the pimples on the face dried. If you have an oily face, you are also recommended to use oil free moisturizers twice daily i.e. morning and at night.
    • Fight blackheads. A baking soda mask will minimize acne over time thanks to its ability to remove blackheads. Blackheads have bacteria that cause acne and excess oil which is trapped in pores of your skin. This mask is gentle on many skin types and even though it may cause a stinging sensation, this treatment that has been in use for ages.
    Ingredients
    • Baking soda (not powder)
    • Clean water
    Directions
    • Step 1: Clean Your Face. Clean the face using a clean face towel and peanut butter or some warm water then dry the face well.
    • Step 2: Prepare the Baking Soda. Take eight teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate and pour it inside a cup. You can go for Hammer or Arm baking soda even though any other type will do.
    • Step 3: Add Some Water. Take some water (half as-much) and pour it into the cup.
    • Step 4: Stir the Mixture. Take a spoon and stir the mixture. If it has excess water, add some baking soda, but if it is dry add some water. Ensure the mixture is creamy and soft i.e. not too thick or too light/thin.
    • Step 5: Apply the Paste. Once you have a smooth consistency, apply it to the pimples with clean hands.
    • Step 6: Wait. Once all pimples have been covered, leave the mask on for about 15mins or until the paste dries.
    • Step 7: Rinse off the Paste. After the 15 minutes are done or the paste has completely dried off, rinse the hardened paste off.
    • Step 8: Moisturize. Pat dry your face gently using a soft hand-towel. Afterwards, apply oil-free moisturizer to the neck and face. This will ensure that pH is balanced, and the needed moisturizer is added to your skin.
    • Step 9: Repeat Twice a Week. Do this twice a week until the pimples have disappeared.
Warnings: Baking soda may over-dry your skin and that is why you need to moisturize soon after. You may experience burning or stinging, dryness or/and itchy sensations. If you have skin that cannot handle the face mask, kindly rinse it off as soon as possible then apply oil-free moisturizer to have the skin hydrated and moisturized.

    2. Other Ways to Use Baking Soda for Acne Skin Care

    • Baking Soda Bath. Add 100grams or half a cup of baking soda to your warm bath water. This will refresh your skin especially if you have been exposed to swimming pool-water that has been heavily chlorinated. Baking soda bath also prevents breakouts that are caused by pseudomonas skin infections. You can also loosen blackhead skin at the back by having a sponge bath mixed with water.
    • Baking Soda with Shampoo. Add 2-3 grams of baking soda to your bottle of shampoo to get rid of volumizer and mousse thus reducing acne at the hairline on the forehead.
    • Baking Soda to Relieve Sunburn. Mix 120ml of some cool water with 15 grams of baking soda can help slow down pigment formation in your skin and also relieve sunburn.
Warnings: You should be careful when using baking soda because it may cause uncomfortable sensations such as burning and stinging. To be on the safe side, you should test it with your hands before using it. Baking soda is suitable for your daily use. However, if your skin is very sensitive, avoid using it regularly.

    Let's treat acne/pimples naturally

Acne, medically known as Acne Vulgaris, is a skin disease that involves the oil glands at the base of hair follicles.
    I

    The types of pimples

    • Whiteheads - remain under the skin and are very small
    • Blackheads - clearly visible, they are black and appear on the surface of the skin. Remember that a blackhead is not caused by dirt. Scrubbing your face vigorously when you see blackheads will not help
    • Papules - visible on the surface of the skin. They are small bumps, usually pink
    • Pustules - clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are red at their base and have pus at the top
    • Nobules - clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are large, solid pimples. They are painful and are embedded deep in the skin
    • Cysts - clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are painful, and are filled with pus. Cysts can easily cause scars.

    What causes acne or pimples?

Nobody is completely sure what causes acne. Experts believe the primary cause is a rise in androgen levels - androgen is a type of hormone. Androgen levels rise when a human becomes an adolescent. Rising androgen levels make the oil glands under your skin grow; the enlarged gland produces more oil. Excessive sebum can break down cellular walls in your pores, causing bacteria to grow.
Some studies indicate that a susceptibility to acne could also be genetic. Some medications that contain androgen and lithium may cause acne. Greasy cosmetics may cause acne in some susceptible people. Hormone changes during pregnancy may cause acne either to develop for the first time, or to recur.

Best All Natural Remedies for Acne:

    1. Baking Soda-This stuff powerful at clearing skin! Baking soda not only helps eliminate breakouts and reduces inflammation, it is also an exfoliator and helps remove dead skin cells! Because of this, it also works great to reduce any old scars or acne marks. To use it, just take a few teaspoons of baking soda and mix it with warm water until it forms a paste. Apply the paste to your skin. You may want to leave it on for only 10 to 15 minutes the first few times as it may feel powerful. You can gradually increase the time up to an hour or even leave it on overnight (which is what I do). After one use you can see a great difference in your skin.
    2. Apple Cider Vinegar- This natural remedy for acne is another powerful one, it has both antibacterial and anti fungal properties. To start out, you may want to dilute a few teaspoons with half water or ¼ water as it can be quite powerful when applied directly to your skin. Make sure to use Apple Cider Vinegar that’s raw, unfiltered and labeled as “with the mother”, which has the most nutrients.
    3. Coconut Oil- Coconut oil is antibacterial and anti fungal. Coconut oil is also extremely moisturizing and gentle. It helps fight the bacteria and reduce redness. Apply the coconut oil to your skin and massage it in. You can reapply a couple times per day. With coconut oil, there is no need to ever use a moisturizer again, it works so well and doesn’t clog your pores. For optimal benefit, use cold pressed coconut oil/extra virgin coconut oil that is unrefined.
    4. Tea Tree Oil- Tea tree oil is an essential oil and can be a very powerful all natural remedy for acne, as it is antibacterial. To apply it, mix a small amount of tea tree oil with an equal amount of water. Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply it to your skin. You can reapply throughout the day or leave it on under your makeup.
    5. Egg Whites- For this, I’m not talking about eating them, they make a great natural remedy for acne when used as a facial mask! Egg whites reduce the oil and minimize your pores in addition to drawing out impurities. To use it, separate the egg white from the yolk, use a cotton ball or you can use your fingers to apply the egg white to your skin. After a few minutes you’ll start to feel it tighten, you can leave it on anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. Afterwards, your skin will have an amazing glow!
    6. Lemon Juice- For this one, you can either use lemon juice or a fresh squeezed lemon. Lemons have natural antibacterial and astringent properties to help clear your skin. Apply the lemon juice to your skin and leave on for 15 minutes to an hour.
    7. Garlic- Not only is garlic a great natural antibacterial when ingested, it also works great topically. To use it, take a clove of garlic and thinly slice it. Rub the slices on your skin, particularly any problem areas, making sure the juice of the garlic is applied. Leave on for 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
    8. Ice Cubes- Rub an ice cube on problem areas to help reduce inflammation. Not only, does the cold close your pores it also forces the bacteria out. You can also splash your face with cold water to achieve similar affects.
    9. Aloe Vera gel- Aloe is very soothing and reduces inflammation and redness. To use it, apply the gel to your skin with your fingers, you can apply it several times a day. If you have an aloe plant, it would be even better as you get the aloe fresh, without any added ingredients. Or you could also just get an organic aloe gel.
These definitely will work wonders to eliminate the acne
