Career Opportunities
for Teaching Staff
In order to strengthen the academic and
professional programmes, serve the growing number of students, and pursuant to
our focus of being a centre of academic and professional excellence, Mount
Kenya University School of Law wishes to recruit qualified academic staff as
follows:
1. DEAN – SCHOOL OF
LAW:
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
·
An earned doctorate
of at least Ph.D. level in law or its equivalent from a recognized University.
·
A Professor or
Associate Professor of Law
·
At least 8 years of
University teaching, four (4) of which as full time Senior Lecturer
·
Successfully
supervised at least four (4) Masters students or two (2) Ph.D. students since
being appointed Senior Lecturer.
·
Either (i) four (4)
articles in refereed journals or (ii) Two (2) articles in refereed journals
plus one (1) book by a reputable publisher, since being appointed senior
lecturer.
·
Evidence of active
participation in departmental activities and good quality teaching.
·
Evidence of
attendance and contribution at learning conferences, seminars or workshops
Membership in a Professional body such as the Law Society of Kenya
·
Evidence of
administrative experience as either Dean or Head of Department in an academic
environment for at least TWO years
2. PROFESSORS:
Applicants must meet the following
requirements:
·
An earned doctorate
degree of at least Ph.D. level in a relevant field.
·
12 years of
University teaching at lecturer level and above, at least five (5) of which as
Associate professor.
·
Successfully
supervised at least four (4) students including two (2) Ph.D. students since
being appointed Associate professor.
·
At least four (4)
articles in refereed journals, or Two (2) articles in refereed journals plus
one (1) book by a reputable publisher, since being appointed Associate
Professor.
·
Evidence of active
participation in departmental activities and good quality teaching
·
Evidence of
attendance and contribution at learning conferences, seminars or workshops
3. ASSOCIATE
PROFESSORS:
·
Applicants must meet
the following requirements:
·
An earned doctorate
of at least Ph.D. level in law or its equivalent from a recognized University.
·
At least 8 years of
University teaching, four (4) of which as full time Senior Lecturer
Successfully supervised at least four (4) Masters students or two (2) Ph.D.
students since being appointed Senior Lecturer.
·
Either (i) four (4)
articles in refereed journals or (ii) Two (2) articles in refereed journals
plus one (1) book by a reputable publisher, since being appointed senior
lecturer.
·
Evidence of active
participation in departmental activities and good quality teaching.
·
Evidence of
attendance and contribution at learning conferences, seminars or workshops
4. SENIOR LECTURERS:
Applicants must meet the following
requirements:
·
An earned doctorate
degree of at least Ph.D. level in a relevant field.
·
5 years of University
teaching, 3 of which as a full time lecturer after Ph.D. degree qualification.
·
Either 2 articles in
referred journals, or One (1) book by a reputable publisher, since being
appointed lecturer.
·
Evidence of active
participation in departmental activities and good quality teaching.
·
Evidence of
attendance and contribution at learning conferences, seminars or workshops
NOTE: Four (4) years experience in research institute will be
accepted in lieu of two (2) years University teaching. Reputable publisher means
one who has submitted manuscripts for refereeing before acceptance for
publication.
5. LECTURERS:
Applicants must meet the following
requirements:
·
Applicants must be
holders of a Ph.D. degree or recognized professional qualification of
equivalent status from recognized universities. Evidence of research
publications will be an added advantage.
·
The successful
candidate will be required to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate
levels, supervise research and participate in other departmental activities.
·
Applicants with LL.M
and at least 3 years teaching experience may be considered.
·
Applicants registered
for a PhD and able to show satisfactory progress will have an advantage.
·

attendance and contribution at learning conferences, seminars or workshops
TERMS OF SERVICE:
The terms of service for the teaching
posts of Lecturer and above include gratuity at the end of the contract term, a
generous Medical Scheme, a House Allowance, Non-Practicing Allowance and a
Commuting Allowance.
The application letter should give full
details of Educational and Professional qualifications, Work Experience,
Present Post and Salary, applicant’s telephone number and E-mail address.
Copies of certificates and testimonials
should also be enclosed giving the names and addresses of three (3) Referees
who are up-to-date with the applicant’s competence and area of specialization.
Applicants with qualifications earned
in universities outside of Kenya are required to enclose a recognition letter
from the Commission for University Education.
