Request for Proposals:Provision of Consultancy Services for Technical and Business Skills Capacity Development for Sanitation and Waste Management Entrepreneurs Practical Action is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that uses technology to challenge poverty in developing countries.

Our goal areas and cross-cutting themes are; universal access to energy; urban water, sanitation and waste services; food security, agriculture and disaster risk reduction, Markets development, gender and climate change.
Practical Action is currently implementing a WASH Programme in Nakuru – in Mwariki, Ronda and Kaptembwo settlements in partnership with among others; K- Rep Bank, Nakuru County Government and the Kenya Wash Alliance.
The overall purpose of the project is reduce poverty through improved environmental health and economic conditions by empowering people and creating an enabling environment aiming at achieving increased sustainable access to safe water and sanitation services
To assist in the implementation of the project, Practical action is inviting proposals from suitably qualified individuals or consultancy firms with the ability to provide technical and business skills capacity development for sanitation and waste management Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) working in low income areas in Nakuru West Sub County, Nakuru County
Objectives of the assignment

Undertake a detailed capacity needs assessment for the sanitation and waste management SMEs and use the findings to develop training modules,

Conduct trainings to build capacity of local entrepreneurs in small business development skills in sourcing for capital, marketing and book keeping using participatory approaches,

Build the technical skills of local waste management entrepreneurs in value recovery from the various streams of solid waste,

Train the local sanitation entrepreneurs to develop bankable business plans for sourcing capital to implement viable faecal sludge management enterprises, and

Post-training follow up of trainees on uptake and implementation of acquired skills in business operations of the sanitation and waste management MSEs using business mentor-ship approach.Scope of consultancy service
Specifically, under the leadership and with support of the project manager, the consultant will undertake the following assignment:

Review appropriate project documents to understand the desired project milestones and develop an effective training/capacity development schedule,

Undertake capacity needs assessment for the sanitation and waste management entrepreneurs and design appropriate training modules,

Conduct trainings to build capacity of local entrepreneurs in small business development skills in sourcing for capital, marketing and book keeping using participatory approaches,

Build the technical skills of local waste management entrepreneurs in value recovery from the various streams of solid waste,

Train the local sanitation entrepreneurs to develop bankable business plans for sourcing capital to implement viable faecal sludge management enterprises, and;

Provide post-training follow up of trainees on uptake and implementation of acquired skills in business operations of the sanitation and waste management MSEs using business mentor-ship approaches.Assignment duration
The duration of this assignment shall not exceed twenty one (21) working days spread over a period of one and a half months broken down as follows:

Capacity needs assessment for sanitation and waste management SMEs- 2 days,

Development/preparation of training modules and materials- 3 days,

Phase one training for the SMEs- 4 days,

Follow up on business idea and proposal development- 5 days ,

Phase two training-4 days, and

Report writing- 3 days.

Practical Action will cater for all the logistical requirements for the mobilization of sanitation entrepreneurs, identified local persons and trainings including selection, invitation and venue management.All the training/workshop venues and field visit travels will be in Nakuru County.
Expected Deliverables
The main outputs of this consultancy assignment will be:

A needs assessment report containing a detailed presentation of the findings and proposed modules for training,

Detailed reports for the two training workshops and post training follow up recommendations.The proposals should include the following:

Technical capacity statement demonstrating understanding and interpretation of the Terms of Reference (TORs)

Expertise and experience in undertaking similar assignments in the past,

Experience in developing social enterprises/products that provide Sanitation and Waste Management services is a mandatory requirement

List of major consultancy or work assignments carried out in the last 2 years

Financial proposal , compromising a fee rate per day

Length of similar professional experience (minimum 3 years)

Copy of Consultants’ Curriculum Vitae (CV) including three professional referees

Registration and VAT certificates and PIN for firms and individual consultants respectively respectively and VAT /VAT/PIN and tax compliance certificates.

Experience working with international NGO in urban WASH will be added advantage.
