Nature's Goodness: Essential Oils and skin care

04:20

For Vaginal wall rejunivation

"Manjakani" is unlike any other lubricant or tightening cream because it tightens naturally while providing just the right amount of lubrication for maximum pleasure and comfort.

What's in it?
Manjakani Plus Gel contains extract of oak galls, a remarkable natural ingredient that increases muscle tension in the lower vagina, enabling a firmer grip for increased sexual enjoyment for both partners. Now, added with extracts of Pueraria Mirifica to further enhance natural lubrication and healthier vaginal elasticity and health.
How does it work?
Oak gall's astringent properties give instant tightening effects, while its antioxidant properties tone up vaginal walls to help reverse the loss of elasticity due to aging, hormonal changes and childbirth. These properties also help reduce problems caused by age-related thinning of vaginal tissues. Its natural antiseptic actions can help to prevent infections.

Effective as a Lubricant too!

As women age, the vaginal lining thins, causing irritation, painful intercourse and increased risk of yeast and bacterial infections. It has been shown that manjakani is able to help restore the health of mucosal tissue, reducing the problems associated with the thinning of the vaginal lining. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, manjakani also aids in healing external tissue damage after childbirth. Externally, it can be used to reduce swellings and bruises caused by minor injuries.
Research has also shown that manjakani extract has natural antiseptic properties that are effective in eliminating bacteria, yeast and fungal infection, the main cause of itching and unpleasant odour in the intimate area. In addition, its astringent properties assist in reducing excessive discharges, which is another cause of unpleasant odour.
Manjakani also maintains the natural colour of the intimate area. Its extract has unique antioxidant properties that are effective in reducing melanin formation and preventing discoloration. Frequent bacterial of fungal infections and the use of harsh soap may cause discoloration (darkening) of the skin around the genital area.
Oak galls are produced when the leaves of the oak tree (scientifically known as Quercus infectoria) are infested by stinging wasps, known as cynips. The spontaneous chemical reaction which follows the infestation, stimulates the leaves to produce a roundish hard ball, called oak gall or manjakani in the Malay language.

Sunlight for Health and Healing
The sun is the mediator of life on earth, whether it be the emerging leaf of a growing plant or the beautiful complexity of the human body. Life cannot exist or function without sunlight.
Sunlight creates the environment necessary for our existence. It creates oxygen and carbon dioxide. It regulates temperature and humidity at life -supporting levels.

Vitamin D- the Sunshine Vitamin
Vitamins are organic chemicals found in the food we eat, acting as catalysts, or facilitators, of the metabolic processes involved in everyday living. Our bodies manufacture chemicals of a similar nature and function, but these are called hormones.
The body's daily requirement of this Vitamin is about 400 units. Exposing your face to sunlight for just 15 minutes will give you more than just your daily requirement.
Vitamin D can also be obtained from Fish Liver especially cod and shark for straight, strong bones with the proper proportions of calcium and phosphorous.

HERBS THAT CURE

10 Best Healing Herbs

"Herbs and other natural remedies can be as effective as traditional treatments, often without the same negative side effects,"
Here are 10 superhealers you'll want to add to the all-natural section of your medicine cabinet—and even to your favorite recipes. Folding one or two of them into your cooking every day can yield big benefits.

Turmeric: Ease arthritis
A heaping helping of curry could relieve your pain. That's because turmeric, a spice used in curry, contains curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory that works similarly to Cox-2 inhibitors, drugs that reduce the Cox-2 enzyme that causes the pain and swelling of arthritis, says Lee.
It might also: Prevent colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease. According to a small  clinical trial conducted by a researcher, curcumin can help shrink precancerous lesions known as colon polyps, when taken with a small amount of quercetin, a powerful antioxidant found in onions, apples, and cabbage. .

Cinnamon: Lower blood sugar
In a recent  study of type 2 diabetics, taking cinnamon extract daily successfully reduced blood sugar by about 10%.
It might also: Lower cholesterol. Cinnamon packs a one-two punch for people with type 2 diabetes by reducing related heart risks. In another study of diabetics, it slashed cholesterol by 13% and triglycerides by 23%.

Rosemary: Avoid carcinogens
Frying, broiling, or grilling meats at high temperatures creates HCAs (heterocyclic amines), potent carcinogens implicated in several cancers. But HCA levels are significantly reduced when rosemary extract (a common powder) is mixed into beef before cooking, say  researchers. "Rosemary contains carnosol and rosemarinic acid, two powerful antioxidants that destroy the HCAs," .
It might also: Stop tumors. Rosemary extract helps prevent carcinogens that enter the body from binding with DNA, the first step in tumor formation, according to several animal studies. When researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign fed rosemary extract to rats exposed to dimethylbenzanthracene, a carcinogen that causes breast cancer, both DNA damage and tumors decreased. "Human research needs to be done," says study author Keith W. Singletary, PhD. "But rosemary has shown a lot of cancer-protective potential."

Ginger: Avert nausea
Ginger can prevent stomach upset from many sources, including pregnancy, motion sickness, and chemotherapy. "This is one of Mom's remedies that really works," says Suzanna M. Zick, ND, MPH, a research investigator at the University of Michigan. A powerful antioxidant, ginger works by blocking the effects of serotonin, a chemical produced by both the brain and stomach when you're nauseated, and by stopping the production of free radicals, another cause of upset in your stomach. In one study of cruise ship passengers traveling on rough seas, 500 mg of ginger every 4 hours was as effective as Dramamine, the commonly used OTC motion-sickness medication. In another study, where subjects took 940 mg, it was even more effective than the drug.

Garlic: Lower cancer risk
High consumption of garlic lowered rates of ovarian, colorectal, and other cancers, says a research review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A Japanese clinical trial also found that after a year of taking aged garlic extract supplements, people with a history of colon polyps saw a reduction in the size and number of the precancerous growths detected by their doctors.
It might also: Provide cardiovascular benefits. Garlic contains more than 70 active phytochemicals, including allicin, which many studies have shown decreases high blood pressure by as much as 30 points. Garlic may help prevent strokes as well by slowing arterial blockages, according to a yearlong clinical study at UCLA. In addition, patients' levels of homocysteine, a chemical that leads to plaque buildup, dropped by 12%.
Maximize the benefits: Crushed fresh garlic offers the best cardiovascular and cancer-fighting benefits, . But you'll need to down up to five cloves each day.
 Lavender benefits on Health
The health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect the scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems. The Latin name of lavender is Lavare, which means “to wash”, due to its aroma which has a particularly clean aroma.
Lavender oil is extracted mostly from the flowers of the lavender plant, primarily through steam distillation. The flowers of lavender are fragrant in nature and have been used for making potpourri for centuries. Traditionally, lavender essential oil has also been used in making perfumes. The oil is very useful in aromatherapy and many aromatic preparations and combinations are made using lavender oil.
Lavender oil blends well with many other essential oils including cedarwood, pine, clary sage, geranium, and nutmeg. Today, lavender essential oil is frequently used in various forms including aromatherapy oil, gels, infusion, lotion, and soaps.

 HEALTH BENEFITS
The various health benefits of lavender essential oil include the following:
Bug Repellent: The smell of lavender essential oil is potent for many types of bugs like mosquitoes, midges, and moths. Apply some of the lavender oil on the exposed skin when outside to prevent these irritating bites. Furthermore, if you do happen to be bitten by one of those bugs, the lavender essential oil has anti-inflammatory qualities that will reduce the irritation and the pain associated with bug bites.
Sleep: Lavender essential oil induces sleep which has made it a common recommendation for an alternative treatment of insomnia. Frequent studies on elderly patients have shown an increase in their sleep regularity  when their normal sleep medication is replaced with some lavender essential oil being placed on their pillows. It has such a relaxing impact on people that it can often replace modern medicine for sleep issues.
Nervous system: Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves and anxiety issues. Therefore, it can also be helpful in treating migraines, headaches, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness while also increasing mental activity. It has a well-researched impact on the autonomic nervous system, which is why it is frequently used as a treatment for insomnia and also as a way to regulate heart-rate variability. One study showed that people taking tests showed a significant decrease in mental stress and anxiety, as well as increased cognitive function when they inhaled lavender oil and rosemary oil before taking the exam!
Acne: According to dermatologists and aromatherapists, lavender essential oil is one of the most beneficial oils in the treatment of acne, which is a very uncomfortable and embarrassing condition that primarily affects young people as they move through puberty, but can also afflict adults. It is characterized by red, raised sores on the face and body that develop due to a bacterial infection near the sebum gland. When sebum cannot be properly secreted from the sebum glands on the face, it begins to build up, particularly because puberty stimulates extra sebum and bacteria feeds off of it, creating a vicious cycle of irritation, infection, and visible sores that can result in serious scarring.
Lavender essential oil inhibits the bacteria that cause the initial infection, helps to regulate some of the over-excretion of sebum by hormonal manipulation, and can reduce the signs of scarring after the acne has begun to heal. Adding a small amount of lavender essential oil to other skin creams or ointments can greatly increase the potential for relief and healing.
Lavender essential oil
Pain relief: Lavender essential oil is known as an excellent remedy for various types of pains including those caused by sore and tense muscles, muscular aches, rheumatism, sprains, backache and lumbago. A regular massage with lavender oil can also provide relief from pain in the joints. A study done on postoperative pain relief showed that combining lavender essential oil vapor into the oxygen significantly reduced the amount of pain experienced, versus those patients only revived with oxygen after a major surgery.
Urine flow: Lavender essential oil is good for urinary disorders because of its stimulating effect on urine production. Furthermore, it helps in restoring hormonal balance and reducing cystitis or inflammation of the urinary bladder. It also reduces any associated cramps with these and other disorders.
Respiratory disorders: Lavender oil is widely used for various respiratory problems including throat infections, flu, cough, cold, asthma, sinus congestion, bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. The oil is either used in the form of vapor or is applied on the skin of the neck, chest and back. It is also added to many vaporizers and inhalers that are commonly used for colds and coughs. The stimulating nature of lavender essential oil can also loosen up the phlegm and relieve the congestion associated with respiratory conditions, speeding up the recovery process and helping the body naturally eliminate phlegm and other unwanted material. The vapor of lavender essential oil also has antibacterial qualities which can battle respiratory tract infections.
Hair care: Lavender essential oil is useful for hair care because it has been shown to be very effective on lice, lice eggs, and nits. Furthermore, lavender essential oil has also been shown to be very helpful in the treatment of hair loss, particularly for patients who suffer from alopecia, an autoimmune disease where the body rejects its own hair follicles. A Sottish study reported that more than 40% of alopecia patients in the study reported an increase in hair growth when they regularly rubbed lavender essential oil into their scalp. Therefore, lavender oil is sometimes recommended as a preventative measure for male pattern baldness!
Cancer: Although more research needs to be done on human subjects, there is significant research on the effects of lavender, in combination with other essential oils, as a way to prevent the occurrence of breast cancer in mice. However, this could be an indication of an increased chance of lavender battling other carcinogenic effects and the presence of cancer.
Blood circulation: Lavender essential oil is also good for improving the circulation of blood in the body. It also lowers blood pressure and is often used for hypertension. This means that not only do the organs increase their levels of oxygenation, promoting muscle strength and health, but brain activity can have a noticeable boost, skin remains bright and flushed with blood, and the body is protected from the risks of heart attack and artherosclerosis that is often associated with poor circulation. Finally, in terms of diabetic patients, the application or inhalation of lavender essential oil can prevent some of their serious risks of low circulation, which can lead to dangerous or even fatal complications.
Digestion: Lavender oil is useful for digestion because it increases the mobility of food within the intestine. The oil also stimulates the production of gastric juices and bile, thus aiding in the treatment of indigestion, stomach pain, colic, flatulence, vomiting and diarrhea.

Immunity: Regular use of lavender essential oil provides resistance to a variety of diseases. It is well-known that lavender has antibacterial and antiviral qualities that make it perfect for defending the body against rare diseases like TB, typhoid, and diphtheria, according to early research in the 20th century.
General Skin care: The health benefits of lavender oil for the skin can be attributed to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. It is used to treat various skin disorders such as acne, wrinkles, psoriasis, and other inflammatory conditions. It is commonly used to speed up the healing process of wounds, cuts, burns, and sunburns because it improves the formation of scar tissues. Lavender oil is also added to chamomile to treat eczema.
Other: Other health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to treat leucorrhoea. The oil can also used to repel mosquitoes and moths, which is why you will find many mosquito repellents that contain lavender oil as one of the primary ingredients.
As with many other essential oils, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using lavender essential oil. It is also recommended that patients with diabetes stay away from lavender oil. It may also cause allergic reactions to people that have unusually sensitive skin. Some people may also witness nausea, vomiting and headaches due to either common or excessive use of lavender oil.

Aloe vera and its million benefits

Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries.

Aloe leaves secrete a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin.
Various studies have been conducted to examine the benefits of the aloe vera plant and it was found out that aloe vera does in fact have several properties that are effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, from flaky or dry skin, cosmetic ailments, hair and scalp problems to many more.

It is also said to be useful in treating wounds and burns, minor skin infections, cysts, diabetes, and elevated blood lipids in humans, and shows some promise in treating more serious and persistent conditions such as eczema, genital herpes, dandruff, psoriasis, canker sores, skin ulcers and others, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Here are 8 benefits of using aloe vera gel:

1. It treats sunburn.

Aloe Vera helps with sunburn through its powerful healing activity at the epithelial level of the skin, a layer of cells that cover the body. It acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps replenish its moisture. Because of its nutritional qualities and antioxidant properties, the skin heals quicker.
2. It acts as a moisturizer.

Aloe moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily skin complexion. For women who use mineral-based make-up, aloe vera acts as a moisturizer and is great for the face prior to the application to prevents skin drying. For men: Aloe vera gel can be used as an aftershave treatment as its healing properties can treat small cuts caused by shaving.

3. It treats acne.

Aloe vera gel contains two hormones: Auxin and Gibberellins. These two hormones provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin inflammation. Giberellin in aloe vera acts as a growth hormone stimulating the growth of new cells. It allows the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring.

Aloe is soothing and can reduce skin inflammations, blistering and itchiness, while helping the skin to heal more rapidly.  Aloe is used to effectively heal chronic skin problems, such as psoriasis, acne and eczema.
4. It fights aging.

As we age, everyone begins to worry about the appearance of fine lines and the loss of elasticity in their skin. Aloe leaves contain a plethora of antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and E that can help improve the skin's natural firmness and keep the skin hydrated.

5. It lessens the visibility of stretch marks.

The skin is like one big piece of elastic that’ll expand and contract as needed to accommodate growth. But if the skin stretches too far, too fast (due to pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss) the elasticity of the skin can be damaged. That’s what leaves those unsightly stretch marks. These marks appear due to minor tears in the layers of the skin caused by sudden and excessive stretching. Aloe vera gel can help hide these stretch marks by healing these wounds.
6. It's nutrient rich for good health.

This solid material contains over 75 different nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sugars, anthraquinones or phenolic compounds, lignin, saponins, sterols, amino acids and salicylic acid.
7. It soothes in periodontal disease.

According to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it's extremely helpful in the treatment of gum diseases like gingivitis, periodontitis. It reduces bleeding, inflammation and swelling of the gums. It is a powerful antiseptic in pockets where normal cleaning is difficult, and its antifungal properties help greatly in the problem of denture stomatitis, apthous ulcers, cracked and split corners of the mouth.
8. It aids in digestion.

The internal benefits of aloe vera are supposed to be just as amazing. when you take aloe vera juice, it aids in healing ulcers. Some people consider it a laxative, while others attribute that effect to its digestive qualities (which normalize the system and induce regularity). The juice is also prescribed for arthritis and rheumatism. To test any of these claims, steep the cut foliage in water or chew pieces of the fresh leaf.

Bicarbonate of soda or baking soda for treating acne

In Nakumat supermarkets here in Nairobi you ' ll find it labelled Bi carbonate of soda, other names are baking soda but  not baking powder

Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, has many uses in the beauty and health category. It can be used as deodorant, toothpaste and even in a number of home remedies for skin exfoliation.
Acne develops when growth of bacteria and the cells of your skin clump together causing a swollen pimple. Not only does acne cause major cosmetic concerns for many people, but it can also be quite uncomfortable.
Several skincare authorities have touted exfoliates to be part of an effective acne treatment and prevention regimen. Everyday household ingredients can be used in making exfoliating paste made from baking-soda. Simple home-made facial masks made with baking soda can help you deal with the acne trouble.

Is Baking Soda Effective in Treating Acne?

Baking soda is amphoteric which means that it has the ability to either act as a base or acid. This characteristic makes it a useful pH neutralizing chemical compound. It corrects the pH imbalance of the skin that contributes to acne formation. What's more, baking soda has mild anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that enable it to lessen the irritation caused by inflamed acne. Most importantly, baking soda has individual particles that are rounded and hard and also form fine powders thus making it a mild exfoliate.

How to Use Baking Soda to Treat Acne

Some people claim that skin pH imbalance can be caused by using baking soda long-term. As a result, bacteria growth, which plays a major role in occurrence of acne, is promoted. Treating acne depends on a number of factors since not all treatments, depending on the condition of your body and extent of acne, this baking soda remedy will not work for all patients. When using baking soda to treat acne, you should first test the skin. If the acne worsens and no positive results are experienced even after using it long-term, discontinue its use and seek advice from a dermatologist. They'll advise you on how to deal with it.

Essential oils

Rosemary

Pairs well with: Potatoes; citrus; honey; garlic; onions; chile peppers
May help: Enhance mental focus, fight foodborne bacteria.

In ancient Greece, scholars wore rosemary garlands to help them study—and one recent study found that people performed better on memory and alertness tests when mists of aromatic rosemary oil were piped into their study cubicles. Rosemary is often used in marinades for meats and poultry, and there’s scientific wisdom behind that tradition: rosmarinic acid and other antioxidant compounds in the herb fight bacteria and prevent meat from spoiling, and may even make cooked meats healthier. In March, Kansas State University researchers reported that adding rosemary extracts to ground beef helped prevent the formation of heterocyclic amines (HCAs)—cancer-causing compounds produced when meats are grilled, broiled or fried.

Turmeric

Pairs well with: Garlic; citrus; ingredients in curry powder, such as coriander & cumin
May help: Quell inflammation, inhibit tumors.
In India, turmeric paste is applied to wounds to speed healing; people sip turmeric tea to relieve colds and respiratory problems. Modern medicine confirms some solid-gold health benefits as well; most are associated with curcumin, a compound in turmeric that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has been shown to help relieve pain of arthritis, injuries and dental procedures; it’s also being studied for its potential in managing heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
Researcher Bharat Aggarwal is bullish on curcumin’s potential as a cancer treatment, particularly in colon, prostate and breast cancers; preliminary studies have found that curcumin can inhibit tumor cell growth and suppress enzymes that activate carcinogens.

Chile Pepper

Pairs well with: Ginger; chocolate; beans; beef
May help: Boost metabolism.
Chiles, which create sensations of heat, from mild to fiery, are especially prized in hot climates since, ironically, the spice helps trigger the body’s natural cooling systems. Studies show that capsaicin—a pungent compound in hot chiles—revs up the body’s metabolism and may boost fat burning, but the jury is still out on whether that translates to long-term weight loss. Recent research found that capsinoids, similar but gentler chemicals found in milder chile hybrids, have the same effects—so even tamer sweet paprika packs a healthy punch. Capsaicin may also lower risk of ulcers by boosting the ability of stomach cells to resist infection by ulcer-causing bacteria and help the heart by keeping “bad” LDL cholesterol from turning into a more lethal, artery-clogging form.

Ginger

Pairs well with: Soy sauce; citrus; chile peppers; garlic
May help: Soothe an upset stomach, fight arthritis pain.
Traditionally used to relieve colds and stomach troubles, ginger is rich in inflammation-fighting compounds, such as gingerols, which some experts believe may hold promise in fighting some cancers and reducing arthritis pain. In a recent study, people who took ginger capsules daily for 11 days reported 25 percent less muscle pain when they performed exercises designed to strain their muscles (compared with a similar group taking placebo capsules). Another study found that ginger extract injections helped relieve osteoarthritis pain of the knee. And ginger’s reputation as a stomach soother seems deserved: studies show ginger extracts can help reduce nausea caused by morning sickness or following surgery or chemotherapy, though it’s less effective for motion sickness.

Cinnamon

Pairs well with: Cloves; nutmeg; allspice; chocolate; fruit; nuts
May help: Stabilize blood sugar.

Cinnamon was prized by King Solomon and used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to boost appetite and relieve indigestion. A few studies suggest that adding cinnamon to food—up to a teaspoon a day, usually given in capsule form—might help people with type 2 diabetes better control their blood sugar, by lowering post-meal blood-sugar spikes. Other studies suggest the effects are limited at best.

The Role of Essential Oils In Treating Acne

Essential oils are natural. They are usually organic. And while essential oils are great for aromatherapy, they usually are not good for treating acne-prone or blemished skin.

Essential oils are natural. Here is a sumary of some essential oil for curing acne in a healthy way.

  • Some plant oils are helpful in cleansing and disinfecting the skin. Olive oil and coconut oil can be used to cleanse the skin. In small amounts, they can even be used on oily skin.
  • The most useful essential oil in acne care is tea tree oil, but most products don’t contain enough to do any good. Apply pure tea tree oil with a clean cotton ball directly on pimples.

What Is An Essential Oil?

An essential oil is a water-insoluble liquid containing the aromatic compounds of a plant that give it its distinctive odor. These liquids are also known as ethereal oils, aetherolea, and volatile oils. Most essential oils evaporate below the boiling point of water, so they are not present in herbal teas.
Most kinds of essential oils are distilled from finely ground plant matter. Some essential oils are refined by treatment with hexane or alcohol, the chemical solvent boiling off the essential oil at low temperature leaving the pure essential oil behind. Many of the essential oils used in mass production of skin treatments are not “organic” because they are manufactured with the use of hexane or acetone solvents. Essential oils of bitter orange, sweet orange, and lemon, however, are almost always organic because they are cold-pressed from enormous volumes of citrus peels.
You would ask if essential oils heal acne?
There is good evidence that specific essential oils have specific effects on the brain. Essential oils of bergamot and sweet orange, lemon oil, for instance, help you relax after you work out at the gym. Essential oil of cypress, on the other hand, is a pick-me-up after physical exercise.
Common mint increases vigilance and tend to make you jumpy, as does essential oil of juniper. Peppermint, orange, lime, and geranium help you unwind after doing mental work, while basil and juniper help you continue to focus after long hours at a mental task.
There is also good evidence that certain essential oils have specific healing effects elsewhere in the body. Menthol is a counter irritant. It relieves itching by causing stinging.
Camphor irritates the skin, but because it is also an anesthetic, it relieves itching.
Lavender can stop a headache, and it can anesthetize burned skin. It accelerates irritation so the skin can get rid of burned cells quickly. Capsaicin is distilled from chile peppers. It burns the skin enough that other kinds of pain sensations from deeper in the body are ignored.
When the skin senses irritation, it releases its own stress hormones. These hormones trigger allergies in the skin to destroy potentially infected skin cells. The pores make extra skin oil to carry these potentially infected or toxic skin cells to the surface.
The best idea in treating acne
Jojoba oil, for example, is often beneficial for treating acne on oily skin. It contains a wax that is chemically almost identical to the oil produced by the sebaceous glands under the skin. Like dissolves like, so applying jojoba oil (usually in the form of jojoba oil beads) to whiteheads and blackheads helps unclog pores without causing any kind of irritation; there are compounds in jojoba oil that actually stimulate the growth of collagen in the skin.
Rose hip oil is a good moisturizer for dry skin. Fresh rose hip oil contains large amounts of vitamin C in a form that the skin can absorb and use. If you opened the vial of rose hip oil more than 3 months ago, however, the vitamin C has been destroyed by oxygen from the atmosphere. The oil is still a good emollient for dry skin. It helps open pores so they can drain, without provoking irritation that can cause pimples to break out.
Coriander oil kills staph infections of the skin. Staphylococcus aureus can cause a skin infection that starts out like a pimple, but that grows redder and larger. It may be sensitive to the touch or hurt all the time, and it fills with yellow pus in a circle in the center. Don’t squeeze this kind of pimple. You will infect surrounding skin and everywhere you touch before you wash your hand. A dot of coriander oil applied to the infected area with a clean cotton swab used just once, however, will help fight the infection. Coriander oil has even been used to treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA.
Peperina oil, extracted from a shrub belonging to the Mint Family that grows in the Andes, makes the skin less sensitive to inflammation. It reduces redness of pimples, and also lowers the sensitivity of the skin to cleansers and chemicals. It can make sensitive skin “calm” enough for treatment with benzoyl peroxide.
Coconut oil can be either helpful or harmful for blemish-prone skin. Refined coconut oil is never good for the skin. Virgin coconut oil, on the other hand, contains lauric acid that can kill acne bacteria as well as staph bacteria on the skin. A dab of virgin coconut oil is a good way to treat dry skin around the eyes or on the temples, although you should never slather thick coconut oil over oily skin.
Most food oils in their virgin form can be used to cleanse the skin. Virgin olive oil, for instance, was used for centuries for skin treatment with soap made with wood ash and lye would be too harsh. Olive oil can be used even on oily skin to remove stubborn makeup that you don’t want to try to scrub away. Be sure to pour a tiny amount of olive oil into a dish you use to hold the oil you use in cleansing; you don’t want to dip your fingers in the whole bottle of oil.
The one essential oil that is almost always helpful in controlling blemishes, however, is tea tree oil. This Australian herbal product kills acne bacteria. Tea tree oil can also fight staph infections.
The best way to use this essential oil in the fight against acne is to buy 100% tea tree oil, which you apply directly to pimples with a clean cotton ball, just after you cleanse the skin.
